1992

an ad in the local paper asked for paid subjects i needed the money i made a call some woman asked some medical questions..ever had a concussion.ever fractured your skull..no no every have this .ever have that..yes no yes no .no...yes no.after about 5 million questions it seems the woman said i was good to go..during the questions i had manged to clean my entire apartment.as if the secretary was some kind of Life coach..and not some woman asking about congenital heart defects..
good to go as i was
i went
a warehouse
not a hospital
odd i thought.
but not when i went inside as the warehouse was renovated ...all exposed brick recessed lighting and leather couches..
The large fish tank was the clincher.
that all was
upstanding
and the pretty receptionist
calmed my nerves that i was safe there..

"are you here for the study?"
yes .
yes..i say and she asks me to sign a form .
more yes..yes ..no.no business.

i sit on the couch.watch the fish go back and forth back and forth.
a young guy in a suit comes into the waiting room all smiles
and tells me to follow him
asking the usual questions .."are you a student .you grow up here."
more yes yes .no .no

the room he takes me to
all medical looking but clean and friendly lithographs make it seem
less medically..
there's a cot/ hospital bed kinda thing and all sorts of medical equipment ..but mainly computers...screens
he asks me to lay down and some nurse type woman comes in and
slathers some kinda gel all through my scalp
like a shampoo girl
next she puts some gel on my temples ,my forehead, behind my ears.
next
she puts some kinda bathing cap on my head.
and puts metal type  things on my temples ,my forehead the space behind  my ears.
i must look like a dork beyond  all dorkdom

next
the nurse or whomever she is attaches wires and stuff to the bathing cap and the metal things on on my temples.
Some of the Goo gets on my good dress shirt .The dress shirt i always wear to job interviews.
i make a note to myself to ask for reimbursement
if the goo doesn't come out in the wash..
the nurse or whomever she is attaches the wires on my scalp and temples to a computer screen
The Man
in the suit seeing that everything is connected sits in a chair and across from me holding what look like cue card that we used for vocabulary lessons
"are you comfortable enough "he asks
i don't mention that my head is freezing from the goo
"yes" i say
"good ,;he says,
"let's begin..I am going to say some word and you are to simply listen to them.."
                                    carburetor
                                      saxophone..

he says

I ask "What do I do.Do i repeat the words?"

For a moment he looks angry and than smiles.
"No,"He says ," you just listen...no repeating or talking..are you ready to begin?"
"Yes" I say
and he begins saying the words again with annunciation or whatever they call it on every syllable

                                 abacus
                                 Or -lan-do
                                 adroit
                                 form-id-able
                                 punchbowl

My head is still freezing.i am uncomfortable.I turn my head toward the computer screen
i see a fluctuating red wave..
and the word PUNCHBOWL

"Please don't look at the screen ..it'll only mess things up..."
He makes a face looking at the screen
which I am not allowed to look at..
"and please concentrate ON THE WORDS I SAY ...try not to let your everyday worries ruin our work here,,maybe a bit of Valium.."he says getting up and opening the door..

Once I am sure he has left I turn to the screen to see what all the fuss is about

Computer Network Mimics Schizophrenic Thinking

By Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on May 6
A computer network, simulated to mimic thinking in a  schizophrenic way, according to researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Yale University.

The neural network (called DISCERN) was developed by Grasemann’s adviser, Risto Miikkulainen, Ph.D., when studying human schizophrenics.
In order to mimic the process, researchers began
                                                                                        *

teaching DISCERN some simple stories that were then assimilated into DISCERN’s memory in much the same way the human brain stores information: not as separate units, but as statistical relationships of words, sentences, scripts and stories.

“With neural networks, you basically train them by showing them examples, over and over and over again,” said Grasemann.

So called  Jabberwocky Technology vetted upon a normal mind can instantly cause either ecstatic hallucinatory self awareness and euphoria or terrifying dissasociative  mental disruption...wireless Psychotronic Instigation and  Neuro- Intervention Techniques while scary in implication Mind Augment Systems are actually quite safe if used judiciously as it can disorient and or incapacitate one's nervous system  the same way pepper spray does without lasting damage and might be  a signifgant strategy for  thing s such as crowd dispersal using frequency and transmission  sites (cell towers for example) already in place ..Derailment Instigation of one's perceptions with Voice to Skull  Artificial Intelligence Programs is also being developed to also instigate changes in a perpetrator's other  senses including one's Occipital Nerve ..so that one'sperceptions are further asuaged until "the crisis" abates
Many companies in very many fields are working on what is also called Chatterbox or Chatbot  technology .Artificial intellegence that might be used in a "hand's off" manner to subdue a violent criminal's mind rather than subdue their bodies

The 'general AI' of Jabberwacky stores everything everyone has ever said, and finds the most appropriate thing to say using contextual pattern matching techniques. In speaking to you it uses just that learnt material, and borrows a little bit of your intelligence as it learns more. With no hard-coded rules, it relies entirely on the principles of feedback

Video Processing

A Disney story is often told through video, whether it’s a movie, a serial, a newscast, or professional sports. This raises a gamut of research challenges with hard-hitting economic impact: for example, automating labor-intensive processes while preserving art directability, avoiding expensive reshoots by adding content-aware flexibility in postproduction, and adapting to a world with increasingly diverse devices.

Computer Vision

Guest interaction at theme parks, motion capture for studios, and sports visualization are just a few of the direct applications for our computer-vision research. We also perform research in which computer vision intersects with human-computer interaction, video processing, display technology, and optics: it plays a role in our work on input devices, content-aware video processing, projector-camera systems, and computational cinematography.

The unparalleled scale and density of Disney’s physical venues give rise to wireless-research topics in relatively uncharted operating regimes, with cost structures that can amortize across tens to hundreds of millions of units. Our work focuses on the physics of radio and antennas—with applications both analog and digital—as well as the algorithms and protocols necessary for wireless networking. Our research agenda is inspired primarily by opportunities at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and at ESPN.

Human-Computer Interaction

We’re interested in the many ways computer interfaces can span the digital and tangible worlds, giving rise to qualitatively new experiences. Our agenda takes advantage of technologies that are relatively new in the commercial world, and whose interactions have not yet been fully explored. Our researchers invent new technologies for sensing touch and pose, as well as creating new sensory experiences such as haptic illusions.

Behavioral Sciences

Our unique investigations into consumer behavior often take the form of field experiments with “real-life” Disney guests and customers. More recent projects have begun to shift to the intersection of technology (particularly mobile) and consumer behavior. We also study other aspects of the media consumption experience. Our goals are to enhance guest satisfaction, test new business models, and further Disney’s aims around social consciousness and sustainability.
