Early research on the media concluded that the media has “minimal effects” on viewers, and this basic conclusion remained largely unchallenged for several decades (Klapper, 1960; Lazarsfeld, Berelson, & Gaudet, 1948; Staiger, 2005). Over time, however, scholars have increasingly realized that the potential for media influence is broader than once believed.
