Analysis revealed that exposure to misinformation regarding the cause of auditory hallucinations during a psychotic episode was linked to a decreased, or even complete absence of, seeking help from mental health professionals by individuals experiencing psychosis and paranoid delusions. Delusions of mind control have existed long before the internet and cell towers, with some proposing that these technological fantasies originated in the late 1800s. Even after accounting for exposure to other sources with similar content, being exposed to mind control ideas while in a state of psychosis can result in contagion among susceptible individuals. Allowing these groups to attract social media users who lack insight into their condition can have violent consequences. It would be somewhat understandable if these groups provided therapeutic support to untreated delusional individuals, but what we have observed is these groups actually encouraging users to delve deeper into their false beliefs, prompting followers to meticulously document every perceived event, leading to an obsession and a feeling of investment in their delusions. This can ultimately result in violence.
