The phenomenon of social media is centered around the creation of meaning through group affiliation. This is exemplified by the early days of Facebook, during which membership was restricted to individuals possessing a .edu email address and attending prestigious universities. The concept of social belonging stands in contrast to the process by which stigmas are developed, and online culture plays a significant role in defining and determining such stigmas. The act of allowing online influencers to persuade voice hearers to add terms such as "targeted individual" and "gangstalking" to their profiles is likely to result in ridicule from individuals outside of the mentally ill community who have not been similarly influenced. An "inducer" is defined as an individual who originates false claims that attract others with similar beliefs. Mental health professionals and activists have worked diligently to counter the stereotypes about voice hearing that are perpetuated by these inducers.
