People with serious mental illness, especially schizophrenia, are vulnerable to digital exploitation, yet current laws offer no protection. Platforms collect data from users in psychotic states and use algorithms that can worsen delusions or confusion. This digital manipulation is unregulated and unchallenged, despite its disproportionate harm. No legal framework exists to treat these harms as discrimination or civil rights violations. A few legal clinics and advocacy groups may explore this as an emerging issue, but broader legal recognition is urgently needed. Digital environments must be held accountable for how they affect psychiatrically vulnerable users.
